I’ve been working from home more lately and I swear I spend more time fixing my lighting than fixing my actual setup. Some days I look fine, then the next day I look washed out or my face is half shadow, and I’m sitting there like a weirdo moving lamps around right before a call.

A specific moment was this week when I joined a meeting and realized the overhead light was making me look like I hadn’t slept in a week. For people who actually got this dialed in, what home office lighting setup looks natural on camera without you messing with it all the time, and do you automate it by time of day or just keep it simple?

I do a basic scene that only changes brightness, not color. Morning is a bit brighter, afternoon slightly lower, and after sunset it stays steady so my face does not shift every hour. A cheap bias light behind the monitor helps a lot too. It makes the camera stop hunting and it feels more natural.

Cheap fix that worked for me was bouncing light off a wall. I aimed a lamp at the wall behind my monitor so it’s soft and even. Looks way more natural than a harsh ceiling light.
