Is the setup complexity of Home Assistant actually worth it?

My honest answer will be yes but not for everyone. Home Assistant gives you local processing and no cloud dependency, it supports hundreds of integrations and the level of automation logic you can build is genuinely impressive. The barrier is real though, it's not plug-and-play and you'll spend time reading documentation, troubleshooting YAML, and learning how it thinks.

If you're the kind of person who enjoys that process, it's one of the most satisfying rabbit holes in this hobby. If you want things to just work without configuration, stick to a polished commercial ecosystem and accept the limitations. What pushed you toward Home Assistant if you made the switch?

That’s a pretty accurate way to frame it. Home Assistant isn’t really hard but it does demand time and patience up front before it feels effortless. The payoff is flexibility and control but only if you actually enjoy building and maintaining it.

The biggest draw for me was getting everything into one system. Having devices from different brands work together without relying on multiple apps was worth the learning curve.
