What is your one must have automation you would never remove?

I’m trying to start my smart home the right way and I’m curious what people consider the best first automations. I want the basics that reduce little daily annoyances, like forgetting lights, fumbling for switches, or remembering to lock up. The confusing part is filtering out the automations that sound cool but end up being unreliable or annoying.

This weekend I set up a very simple routine and it was honestly satisfying when it worked without me thinking about it. That success made me want to build on what actually works, not just add more devices. If you could recommend one or two simple automations to a beginner that make a real difference, what would they be and why did they stay worth it for you?

For me it’s a hallway or entry light triggered by motion after dark with a short timer. It feels like magic the first week, then it just becomes normal and you miss it when it’s gone. The key is keeping it simple so it does not misfire or become a nuisance.

If you only do one, the classic “arrival and bedtime” combo tends to survive forever. Coming home lights on, and a simple bedtime that turns off common lights and sets the house to a calm state. It’s boring, which is exactly why it sticks.
