Looking for a smart plug that reboots when the wifi dies

my son had a good idea about getting a plug that auto resets when it detects an internet outage
I tried the Keep Connect and it was a total nightmare. we spent two hours just trying to save the settings before returning it
I need something reliable for my T-Mobile modem. if the network drops, I want it to power cycle automatically so my security cameras stay online
simple timer won't work, and I can't reset a normal smart plug remotely if the internet is already down
does anyone know of a device that actually works for this?

We went down this exact rabbit hole last year. The big lesson for us was that cloud based smart plugs are the wrong tool for this job. If the internet is down, anything that depends on the cloud is already stuck. What finally worked for us was a watchdog style power reset device that monitors connectivity on its own and cycles power locally. Boring setup, but once it’s in place you forget it exists. Which is exactly what you want for a modem.

If your goal is keeping cameras online, the most reliable pattern is a device that pings a target and power cycles based on failure, not an app based automation. Also worth making sure the plug is not on the same flaky WiFi it’s trying to fix. Some folks run these on Ethernet or a separate access point if possible.

for the T Mobile gateway, if it’s overheating, it can drop the connection but stay powered on
Before buying a new plug, try adding a small USB cooling fan to the top or bottom of the modem
once the gateway stays cool, it stops dropping the connection entirely, and will save you from needing the auto reset plug in the first place
