How stable is a mesh WiFi setup with both gaming PCs and smart home gear?

We’re a PC gaming family here in Ohio, and between our rigs, consoles, and a growing pile of smart home gear (lights, cameras, sensors), the WiFi feels like it’s always working overtime. I’m considering switching over to a mesh WiFi system, but I’m not sure how well it holds up once you mix heavy gaming traffic with all the IoT chatter. Does anyone here run a mesh setup while also having multiple gaming PCs on the same network? Do you notice lag spikes or connection drops when the smart home devices are all chatting in the background? Would love to hear if mesh WiFi is stable enough for both gaming and automation, or if I should be looking at a different setup.
 
A Tri-Band mesh system is generally recommended for this scenario. These systems use a dedicated third radio band, typically 5 GHz, as a wireless backhaul which is the private link between the router and its nodes. This separation is crucial since it prevents the heavy, low-latency traffic from gaming PCs and consoles from congesting the backhaul channel.. that's a common source of lag spikes in Dual-Band setups. The smart home devices you mentioned primarily use the 2.4 GHz band, which operates separately without impacting the dedicated high-speed link. I also suggest to always wire your primary gaming PCs and consoles directly to the main router or the nearest satellite node via Ethernet for peak performance!! This ensures the most reliable, low-latency connection while the mesh efficiently handles the rest of your home's wireless needs.
 
If it were me (and I know it isn’t), I’d wire as many connections as I could, particularly the gaming consoles. I know most “smart house” elements can’t be wired, but for those that can, I believe it’s worth the effort.

Ethernet cable isn’t expensive, and neither is the crimp tool. Running the cable could be a pain, but I’m glad I did it in my house.
 
A modern, capable mesh system is absolutely stable enough for heavy gaming and smart home integration, and it's great for large homes with many devices
Just make sure you're investing in a good system with features that allow prioritization, and get a wired backhaul for the best performance
