How do you make smart home automations reliable, not clever?

Wanted to start a practical Home Automation Forum thread on making automations reliable instead of overly clever

A lot of us start with fun ideas, then we get that moment where the lights flip at 3am or a routine triggers from one weird sensor reading and everyone in the house is annoyed

So what’s your go to way to reduce false triggers?
Do you rely on time windows?
Do want require multiple conditions with sensors?
Do you use presence, motion, and lux together?
Do you add cooldown timers so it doesn’t bounce on and off?

If you’ve got a simple rule that made your automations feel calm and predictable, share it. Bonus if it’s something you learned after an “okay never again” moment

I treat automations like safety systems now. Default to “do nothing” unless it’s really confident. And I add hysteresis everywhere: cooldowns, minimum on-time, and delayed off. It feels boring, but boring is what the house wants.

I build automations like this. First make it work with one trigger. Then add only one extra condition. Time window or lux. Once you stack three conditions you forget why it fails.

My rule is boring on purpose. Use fewer triggers, add time windows, and add a cooldown so stuff can’t bounce. If it’s important, I require two signals like motion plus door open.
