If you rebuilt your smart home today, what stays simple vs advanced that you want to do?

Home Automation Forum question for early February 2026. If you had to rebuild one part of your smart home from scratch, what would you keep dead simple, and what would you still make advanced? I’m curious where people draw the line between “rock solid” and “cool but fragile.”

Pick one area like lighting, climate, presence detection, locks, cameras, notifications, or media. What gets the simple treatment, and what do you still automate aggressively because it’s worth the effort.

If you can, share the reason behind your choices, like fewer false triggers, easier troubleshooting, better household acceptance, or just less maintenance.

For climate, I would keep the thermostat logic simple. Set temps and a basic away mode. I have seen too many “smart” setups fight the house and make everyone mad. The advanced part I would keep is good sensors. One or two room sensors and a simple rule to stop overheating the bedroom. That gives comfort without fragility.

Presence detection is where I would stay simple. Too many false triggers makes everyone hate the smart home. I would only use it for low risk stuff like turning off lights after a long delay. Where I go advanced is notifications, like leak sensors and garage door left open. Those save real headaches.
