adding security system for my home

someone broke into my neighbor's house a few days ago. they were all out of town, and the thief took their jewellery, a couple of laptops, and ate their food. yeah it's scary, and now I want to have a security system for my home.
need some advice about this, I'm thinking about cameras, but I think it's not enough. what else can I add to my security system besides cameras?

A lot of folks add sensors and a smart lock once they realize cameras don’t cover everything. The nice part is they all tie into the same system pretty easily now. Is your goal more to deter someone or to get fast alerts when you’re away?
