What does device hygiene look like in a stable home automation setup?

So we’re a few days into February 2026, and I’m seeing newer members setting up their first automations and adding devices fast, which is exciting, but it can get messy quickly if there’s no system. I’d love to collect the community’s best long-term maintenance habits in one thread, so people can build a stable setup from day one.

So if you had to recommend or suggest a simple system that keeps things readable, what would it be, like naming rules for devices, rooms, and automations? And... how do you handle updates and backups, do you run them on a schedule, only before big changes, or whenever something breaks. Share what works for you, plus the mistakes you would avoid if you could start over.

Bonus question, what’s your best “device hygiene” habit, like reviewing offline devices monthly, cleaning up unused entities, or retiring old automations instead of letting them pile up.

What’s helped me so far is a tiny routine, once in a while I scroll my device list and look for anything offline, duplicated, or named like a random serial number, then I fix it immediately so it doesn’t pile up. I also try to delete test automations once they’ve served their purpose because I know future me will forget why they exist. If I could start over I’d avoid messy names and I’d avoid adding ten devices in one weekend without testing each one.

I try to name things the way a non-nerd would understand it, like “Hallway light main” instead of model numbers. Biggest mistake to avoid is letting test automations live forever. I tag them “TEST” and delete them once the idea is proven so the system stays readable and predictable.
