Separate IoT network or not, what’s working for you?

I wanted to start a practical Home Automation Forum thread on network basics, because a lot of “smart device problems” end up being WiFi problems.

What changes actually reduced random device dropouts for you? Better router placement, adding an access point, switching channels, turning off band steering, lowering 2.4 GHz congestion, or something else that made a real difference.

Also, do you run a separate IoT network? If yes, how did you set it up in a way that did not break everything, and what benefits did you notice? If not, what is your approach to keeping things stable anyway?

If you have a simple checklist for diagnosing dropouts, share it. The goal is to help newer folks avoid chasing device settings when the network is the real culprit.

For me the biggest win was treating 2.4 GHz like its own thing. I turned off band steering for the IoT stuff and kept most smart plugs and sensors on 2.4 only. Router placement and one decent access point helped more than I expected too. Do you have a lot of devices, like 30 plus, or is it more a few problem children.
