New to smart locks and confused about failsafe, what is your backup plan if the battery dies?

I’m looking at getting a smart lock but I keep getting stuck on the basic reliability questions. I like the idea of keyless entry and I think it would be satisfying to stop fumbling with keys. At the same time, I’m worried about the lock battery dying at the worst time and me standing outside like an idiot.

A specific moment that triggered this was last week. I came home with groceries and my hands were full and I thought wow a smart lock would be perfect right now. Then I remembered a friend once said their lock died suddenly and they had to use some weird backup method. That story stuck in my head and now I’m trying to understand what failsafe really means.

For people who have used smart locks for a while, what is your real backup plan. Do you keep a physical key option, hide a key somewhere safe, rely on a keypad, or keep a jump pack for the lock?

For smart locks, I do three layers. Key backup, battery check monthly, and a hidden key stored safely off site like with a trusted person. I don’t love the idea of hiding it outside. Who needs access at your place, just you or family too.

I want a physical key option and a second way in, like another door with a regular deadbolt or a garage entry that still works. I keep spare batteries inside the house, and I replace them early. The real risk is being locked out and also having your backup be insecure.

My setup is keypad plus phone, but I never buy a smart lock without a key cylinder or an external emergency power option. Some locks let you touch a 9V to the outside contacts for a quick boost. That is my peace of mind.

Are you looking at a retrofit deadbolt that keeps your existing key, or a full replacement that is keyless only? Also do you want local only or cloud features. The best backup plan depends on those choices. Some models have a 9V contact for emergency power, but I would still want a key option if it is your main door.
