Looking for the best smart meter to track solar and usage

been thinking into adding a smart energy monitor to pair with my solar setup just to see real-time usage and generation. is it overkill? The inverter app gives me basic stats but I want something more detailed that shows which rooms or devices are pulling the most power. It’s crazy how much gets used when you think the house is “off.” Anyone here already running a smart meter or energy monitor at home? I’ve heard good things about Sense and Emporia, but I’m not sure which one plays nicest with solar systems. I’m not trying to overhaul the setup, just curious how accurate these monitors really are when you’re both consuming and producing power at the same time.

These monitors definitely aren’t a must-have, but they’re great if you’re the type who likes seeing exactly where the power goes. Solar complicates things a bit because the monitor has to track flow in both directions, so accuracy comes down to how clean your panel wiring is. I’ve seen Emporia work great even in older houses. Do you mainly want whole-home insight, or are you trying to break it down by rooms/devices?

If you want clean numbers with solar, just skip Sense. It’s cool, but the device detection gets confused when you’re generating and consuming at the same time. Emporia’s the one that actually lets you monitor circuits directly and see real power flow without guessing. It’s not overkill. It’s just finally knowing what’s chewing through your kWh.
