Home Assistant, HomeKit, or Google Home, what’s your real world take?

Let’s compare ecosystems in a way that helps newer members make a choice without getting overwhelmed. Home Assistant can be powerful, HomeKit can be smooth, and Google Home can be convenient, but the best option usually depends on what you value most and how much time you want to spend maintaining things.

What’s your current ecosystem, and what is the one feature or benefit that keeps you there? Also, what’s the biggest downside you live with, like device dropouts, cloud dependence, limited automation logic, or setup complexity. Those tradeoffs are usually the most helpful part of the conversation.

I started more on Google Home because it was fast to set up and easy for the whole house to use. The downside is the cloud vibes and occasional weird device dropouts at the worst time. I’m tempted by HomeKit for smoothness and HA for real automation logic in 2026.

If I were starting again in 2026, I’d still pick Home Assistant but I’d keep the first month boring. One hub, a few devices that are known stable, and only a couple automations until the foundation feels solid.
