I'm a recently retired IT technician in rural Ireland and finding myself with extra free time I'd like to start exploring home automation.
Hopefully I have some transferrable skills but it's a new area to me so looking forward to learning and implementing.

I hope to start gently with remote locking for my workshop as I never seen to remember to lock up until I'm sitting comfortably in the house and it's raining outside
Next project will probably be installing remote access CCTV. I've previously installed CCTV for clients but remote access was via manufacturer's or third party apps. I don't want anyone else having actual, or potential, access to my camera feeds so I'll have to investigate self-hosted solutions.
Lots of other ideas but I'll keep them on ice until I get one or two projects actually finished.

Best of luck, I do use Blue Iris, and Scrypted myself. So hopefully we will have some folks join us soon enough that can help with that for you.

Those sound like good starts. I know that remote locking would be handy. I use that feature for my car locking when I'm not sure it's locked and I'm comfortable inside. Best wishes.
