Trying to lower heating bills which setup actually works?

With the temps starting to drop here in Vermont, I’m trying to figure out the smarter way to manage heating without driving my power bill through the roof. I’ve been looking into both smart vents and multi-zone thermostats, but I’m not sure which actually gives better energy savings in an older home. Most of my place still runs off a single central system, so I’m wondering if smart vents can really balance things out without upgrading all the ductwork. Or is zoning still the more efficient route long-term, even with the higher upfront cost? Curious what others have tried and what worked best for real energy savings, not just comfort.

yeah, smart vents can actually lower upfront cost. it can make the total cost much less than a full zoning system

If your house still runs on a single central system, smart vents might smooth out temperature differences but don’t expect huge savings. Zoning, on the other hand, actually lets you heat less-used areas less often. The install’s more involved, but if your ducting allows it, it pays off faster over a few winters.
