Trying to outsmart my sneaky cat

I got a dog door, but my little fur missile of a cat figured it out too, I am thinking about rigging an RFID tag on her collar to lock the door when she's close, I just need a solid setup so I'm not building from scratch

That's so cool! First time I've heard of this. Just make sure the system has battery backup or power fail-safe! Or you can check apps that allow you to monitor remotely.

My friend has this PetSafe Smartdoor! it uses RFID collar keys to give access. you can also program different keys for different pets

The SureFlap Microchip Pet Door sounds like a great option, I'll look into it to see if it fits my needs before I go the DIY route

Good call on the backup, do you have any recommendations for apps that work well with these types of systems?

I'm a little concerned about the security of these systems, what happens if the RFID tag or microchip malfunctions? Could it accidentally lock my pet outside, or allow someone else's pet in?

You are talking bout keeping your cat in, and then others are talking about keeping other cats out. But why don't you have the RFID on the pet that is supposed to use the door, and it would not work for any cat/dog/raccoon, etc that does not have the RFID collar?

If there is a enclosed back porch, the outer door could be for any animal the right size, and the house door would be RFID. That way your pet would not be out in the weather even if the chip is not working.

Oh, this makes a lot of sense. Anyway, I think it would be more beneficial in the long run for the RFID to be on the pet maybe through a microchip? If OP is planning to bring said pet around, the RFID is a requirement to travel by plane.

A lot of pets are already microchipped so they can be returned to their families if they are lost/taken. So this may be a feature of that chip. Your vet should know if there is a chip that could do this.
