Worth connecting your thermostat and lights to weather data?

I’ve been thinking about setting up some automations that react to the weather instead of just time or motion. Rhode Island’s been all over the place lately like warm one day, freezing and dark the next... and my lighting and thermostat routines don’t always keep up. I’m wondering if it’s worth connecting everything to real-time weather data so the system adjusts automatically. Anyone here already doing this? I’m curious if it’s reliable or if it ends up being more hassle than it’s worth. I’d love for the house to just know when to turn up the heat or brighten the lights on gloomy days, but I don’t want to overcomplicate my setup if it’s going to be finicky.

It sounds great in theory, but weather data isn’t always as “real-time” as we think. Mine sometimes adjusted after the fact, which got annoying. I ended up going back to simple schedules.

Honestly the thermostat part is hit or miss. Lights reacting to cloud cover? Great. Thermostat reacting to “feels like” temps? Half the time it overshoots. If you set wide buffers so it’s not constantly adjusting, it becomes way less annoying.

Weather based triggers can help, but it really depends on how simple you want your setup to stay. Some platforms do a nice job adjusting heat or lights when the temperature or sunlight shifts, but the rules need to be clean or they can get messy fast. It could help to start with one automation like bumping the heat when the outdoor temp dips below a certain point. Which device would you want to test first, the thermostat or the lights?
