google nest thermostat is annoying

Ugh, is anyone else fed up with their Nest?
Google's making the old one kinda useless, but honestly, it was already annoying me.
With my steam heat, it constantly fires up, literally a minute before the scheduled nighttime setback. It's a waste because absolutely no heat makes it to the apartment before it shuts off!

I want a truly smart thermostat that lets me set a minimum run before setback time, like a 20-30 minute lockout before a big temperature change. Am I crazy, or does no smart thermostat offer a simple feature to prevent this pointless last minute burn?
Any recommendations for a thermostat that's actually intelligent about cycle timing?

That’s been the Nest’s blind spot forever. The learning algorithm doesn’t account for laggy systems like steam or radiant. You’re better off with something open-source like a Flair Puck or Home Assistant setup where you can script the delay yourself. The “AI” thermostats still can’t beat a simple timer rule.

@t0matojuice you need to check out ecobee! They are known for having much better Advanced Threshold Settings that you can manually configure.
Specifically, look for a setting called 'Heat Minimum On Time' (or something similar). Ecobee's default is often 5 minutes (300 seconds), which might be enough to get steam to your radiator.
You might even be able to push that higher. It gives you the control you need to override the 'smart' short cycling

You’re definitely not the only one frustrated with that behavior... there's a lot of Nest users with steam systems say it struggles to “think” in terms of long heat cycles. Curious if anyone here’s found a thermostat that actually handles pre-setback timing intelligently. Does something like Ecobee or Honeywell’s newer line do it any better?
