I was playing around with my smart home setup and thought it’d be fun to automate the porch lights for Halloween this year. Thinking motion sensors tied to my Ring cam so the lights flick on bright when someone walks up, then dim back down after a minute. Maybe even a little orange hue through the Hue bulbs for the vibe. Anyone else doing something similar for trick-or-treat night? Curious what automations or routines y’all are running like motion-triggered lights, music cues, or spooky effects?

I like the bright then dim idea for the Ring cam trigger. you should tie a spooky sound effect to that trigger too! Even a quiet ghostly whisper when they walk up would be creepy.

If you have animated decorations, plug them into a smart plug, and you can trigger their power on only for the short duration of the scare. It's gonna be much more impactful and creepy than having it run non stop

Oh, we're considering to do something similar but with a ramped up audio! We'll tie the ring cam detection to a smart plug that powers a hidden speaker. Instead of looping music, the routine will trigger a short, loud burst of a scream or cackle, then immediately shut the plug off. We're also setting up an end-of-night routine to kill all the automations and the fog machine smart plug when the trick-or-treaters taper off. That would save my sanity later!
